PRESENTAION

Step 1: Circulation

Illustrate the function of ramp and staircase, and what they represent as well as the relationship between circulation and light.

  • Ramp - slow "Premenade Archietcture", enjoy the building.
  • Staircase - fast, quickly go through the building.
  • Light - cave, habitaion, solarium

Step 2: Formal Devices

Demonstrate the geometries and proportions in this building.
  • Geometries: Circle
                     Rectangle
  • Proportion: Golden rectangle
                     Root 5 rectangle
Step 3: relationship between detail and whole

Illustrate how Le Corbusier bring landscape into the building: roof garden, windows and glazing.

  •  Roof Garden - vegetation
  • Windows - directly show the environment
  • Glazings - see through and reflection.

PROJECT 2 - DETIAL & WHOLE

LANDSCAPE IN VILLA SAVOYE

In Villa Savoye, Le Corbusier tries his best to bring landscape into the building. Roof garden is the most obvious elements that achieve this goal, besides that, windows and glazings can also reflect the landscape. For the windows without glazingf, clients can see through it and directly view the environment. For windows with glazings, clients can not only see through them, but also, they can reflect environment.

PROJECT 2 - FORMAL DEVICES

Villa savoye is basically formed of geometries and proportions, for geometries, it formed by circles and rectangles, for proportions, it formed by golden rectangles and root 5 rectangles.

 CIRCLES

These are all the circles in the building.

These are the circles  in ground floor.
White circle - curved glazing wall
Red column - Spiral staircase
Pink circle - curved wall in garage

These are the circles in first level.
Red column - staircase
Blue circles - curved wall in bathroom

These are the circles on the roof.
The yellow and pink circle formed an irregular curve wall
Green circle - another curve wall

RECTANGLES

These are the rectangles in the whole building.

These are the rectangles in ground floor.
Blue rectangle - ramp
Red rectangle - staircase
Black rectangle - inner spaces
White rectangle - livingroom for guest

These are the rectangles in middle level.
Blue rectangle - ramp
Red rectangle - staircase
Yellow rectangle - private space
Green box - public space
Green hole - open roof garden

These are the rectangle in roof.
Blue rectangle - ramp
Red rectangle - staircase
Yellow rectangle - kitchen terrace
Green hole - open roof gargen

PROPORTIONS

Villa Savoye is a product after accurate calculations. Le Corbusier used golden rectangle as a calculation method to set the positions of columns, the height of the walla as well as the divisions of spaces.

Root 5 recangle is another way to search the porpotion in this building. This kind of rectangle can be found in elevations. It decide the position of the middle column as well as the room divisions.

This model combines proportions and Le Corbucier's concept of "Free plans and free facade". Every box inside is in golden rectangle or root 5 rectangle. When they combine together, they form a big box like Villa Savoye, But spaces are not only restrict to boxes, they are changable and can be as different as people's imaginations.

PROJECT 2 - CIRCULATION

This image aims at illustrate circulations in Villa Savoye. Instead of analysing each circulation point, I chose to concentrating on the ramp and staircase which are the main tools in this building and how light will affect them.

According to Le Corbusier's concept of "Promenade Architecture", architecture should provide and relax environment for clients. In this building, ramp is a useful tool to achieve that, ramp has a longer distance and clieants will spend more time in walking on it and by walking on the ramp, clients can easily walk around the building and enjoy it. By comparison, staircase provide clients a fast way to go through the building in a couple of minutes.

Le Corbusier divides this building into three levels: cave, habitation and solarium. Cave refers to the ground floor. The inner space in ground floor is less than the levels above thus ground floor level is the darkest space in this villa. For the middle level, clients share both light and shadows, apart from inner spaces, this level contains an open roof garden and a kitchen terrace which is suitable for humans and can be refered as habitation. Roof is the solarium which is an completely open environment and sunshine just come down directly and this is is brightest level.
This image is to balance the strong conflict between staircase and ramp. In the original building. staircase is beside ramp, one stands for fast another stands for slow which is a little bit leaning. Thus, I put staircase in the middle and arrange ramp around it to demonstrate the strong conflict between them and balance them.
